It is my belief that the next evolutionary step of humanity will be a conscious one, rather than a natural one. In a way, we’ve already begun. We are generally healthier, live longer, and are more consciously aware of things around us than, say, 3 or 4 generations ago.

The reason I chose FEATHR as the acronym is because of the symbolic meanings of a feather.

Symbolic meaning of feathers deal with ascension and spiritual evolution to a higher plane. Feathers were worn by Native American Chiefs to symbolize their communication with Spirit, and to express their celestial wisdom. Also in the Native American Indian culture, feathers represented the power of the thunder gods, along with the power of air and wind.
Native American Pueblo Indians would pay homage to the Feathered Sun which is a symbol of the cosmos and the center of existence. Another symbol meaning of feathers also revolves around prayer, and the Pueblo use feather sticks as they dance in prayer for rain during solstice rituals.
As a Celtic symbol meaning, the feather was worn by Druids in the form of ornate feathered robes. Celtic Druids donned these robes in ceremonies to invoke the sky gods and gain knowledge of the celestial realm. It was believed that the feathered cloak along with the presence of the sky gods would allow the Druid to transcend the earthly plane and enter the ethereal realm.
The Egyptians believed that feathers were symbolic of sky gods too. Ma’at, the Egyptian goddess of justice, would weigh the hearts of the newly dead in the underworld against the weight of a feather to determine the worthiness of his or her soul.
In Christianity feathers represented virtues. In fact, an image of three feathers were made into signet rings – each feather symbolizing Charity, hope, and faith. These rings were worn as a symbol of a virtuous soul – they were also used as wax seals. The ring would be dipped in warm wax then pressed against documents to seal the closure. The recipient would know the documents came from a virtuous man by the indication of the three-feather symbol in the wax.

So, I suggest that the owners of buildings with flat roofs make them green! Plant a layer of sod, a couple of shallow-root trees, maybe some raised gardens. You might even put a small 3/4 enclosed pavilion up there for the smokers in your company to hang out, out of the wind, rain, and snow (if your local climate is so inclined).

In any case, get away from the white roof and into the green!

It’s time to make a choice. We can let present trends continue and risk almost certain breakdown and collapse.

Or… We can act and set humanity on a new course toward a just, thriving and sustainable world.

The choice is clear. We already possess the tools to shape our future. What’s missing is our collective will to act.

Four years is enough time to build that will, to change our direction, even to transform ourselves. And Go because we must start now.

There is still time to act, but no time to waste.

We lost a close friend of our family this past Wednesday. His funeral was yesterday. I should be back on track tomorrow.

Let your passion be heard, or seen, or felt. Do not hide it for fear of what others might say, or think, or feel. It is ~your~ passion! They’ll either get it, or they won’t. And if they get it, perhaps they can find and embrace their passion as well.

Recently I was talking with a friend of mine who is in marketing. I was telling her about some of my ideas. She said to me “That’s green technology! You should make a business of it, and soon!” She was really pumped about it. Since that talk, the idea has grown a bit, and now ~I’m~ pumped about it!

Why must we go so fast? What are we rushing to? Or, better yet, what are we running from?

Micronations – Start Your Own Country!

New countries aren’t formed very often. Every piece of land on the planet is claimed by an existing nation. When a new country does get created it is usually done by violent secession from an existing power. There are a couple of other ways to create a nation, however. These new countries are called micronations.

Since all the land is taken, most micronations are land-less. They exist mostly in the minds of the citizens. In many cases these micronations are a form of role-playing. Often a micronation consists of one eccentric who crowns himself king, puts up a web site, and solicits for subjects. Some of the better known of these have upwards of 50 members, all playing along with the game. The Internet has furthered the expansion of these virtual nations. There is also a movement for personal sovereignty, where each person can make himself king of a one-person country. This is mostly done as a Libertarian or anarchic political statement having to do with individual freedom.

Some micronations are virtual now but want to be real countries. There are serious secessionist movements as well as humorous ones. There is a site, for example, that promotes the secession of California from the United States. A more humorous one is a group promoting the secession of “Baja Arizona.” Any serious secessionist movement in almost any country is asking for a fight if they ever really try it.

Also considered in the land-less nation category are exiled peoples who really are nations in every cultural sense of the word, yet they have been forced to live in exile. The Tibetans are in this predicament now. They have been systematically colonized by the Chinese, had their monasteries destroyed, their men tortured, their women sterilized, and now there are more Chinese living in Tibet than there are Tibetans. Those Tibetans that have escaped are spread around the world as refugees and, with the Dalai Lama as their spiritual and temporal leader, are trying to keep their culture alive even though they no longer have a country.

Technology has produced the possibility of creating artificial “land” where there was none before. 25 years ago I was in the Seattle area and I met a college professor, whose name I don’t remember, who bought a surplus 200-foot ocean-going barge and was looking for another one. His plan was to tow the barges to somewhere in the South Pacific and begin a floating city, independent of any other nation. I don’t know what happened to his project but I visited his first barge while it was anchored in the Puget Sound and it was huge. I could see how this project might work with a little funding.

During World War II several platforms were built by the British in the North Sea to defend against enemy aircraft. Most were dismantled after the war, but one survived – “Rough’s Tower.” In 1967 former British Major, Paddy Roy Bates, took possession of this platform, declared himself its crown prince and called it the Principality of Sealand. He minted coins, created automobile license plates (even though the platform is only 6000 square feet!), and penned laws. Recently the platform has been leased to a business group who is going to turn it into a “data haven” which will allow Internet companies to exist online without any interference or taxation from any country.

Another project is called Oceania. Their plan is to build an artificial island 50 miles off the coast of Panama in the Caribbean. The spot is out of the normal path of hurricanes and the water is only 100 feet deep so there is a real possibility of building an island out of concrete and steel. The website looks like it hasn’t been updated in a few years, however, so this project may be a long time coming if it ever happens at all.
